Hammarby saw off Rangers 2-0 in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League on Wednesday. The Swedes went through at the finals stage after two goals in a match where they controlled the tempo from the start. Rangers arrived with mixed recent form, but this was a different kind of test entirely.

Elin Sorum Ahgren opened the scoring in the twenty-ninth minute, picking up the ball in space and finishing past the goalkeeper. To be fair, Rangers had looked comfortable enough in those early exchanges, but the goal changed the shape of things. Hannah Blake came on for the visitors at the break, and Vilde Hasund matched her for Hammarby shortly after.

Then came the yellow card for Nicola Docherty in the sixty-first minute, followed by another booking for an unnamed Rangers player four minutes later. By then the visitors were pinned back, and two more substitutions on either side at the seventy-first minute showed the managers adjusting. Katie Wilkinson and Brookshire Calliste both came on for Rangers, while Marin Ida Hermannsdottir and Elin Sorum Ahgren were swapped for the hosts.

Fanny Peterson doubled Hammarby's lead in the eighty-seventh minute, and that was essentially it. Jodi Mcleary picked up a yellow card in the eightieth but the result was already clear. Five more substitutions followed, including Mathilde Janzen for Hammarby in the eighty-ninth minute, and the game settled into a comfortable rhythm for the hosts.

Hammarby held 65 per cent possession and fired nine shots off target alongside five on target. Rangers managed just one shot on target from one attempt, with four corners to Hammarby's one. The result means the Swedes advance while Rangers' campaign in this competition is over.
