Wrexham took three points from their eighth Championship match, beating Southampton 2:1 at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday. The hosts had lost to West Ham 6:0 just eight days before, and many expected the visitors to capitalise. We had backed Southampton at 48 per cent confidence, but the match went another way.
Kieffer Moore opened the scoring in the thirty-fifth minute, finishing from close range after a series of crosses from the right. James Ward-Prowse restored parity five minutes into the second half, curling a shot past the goalkeeper from outside the area. And here's the thing — the decisive moment came in stoppage time. Keven Schlotterbeck bundled the ball into his own net in the eighty-ninth minute, and that one mistake ended the contest. Wrexham had been patient, waiting for a slip-up in a game where Southampton pressed high up the pitch but could not find a clean pass into the box.
Southampton dominated the numbers, holding 67 per cent possession and registering 14 key passes against six for the hosts. Yet they managed only seven shots on target and converted none, while their expected goals total of 1.6 told a story of chances gone begging. Wrexham, by contrast, needed just four shots on target and two goals to take the points.
The result lifts Wrexham to eight points in eight games, keeping them in the lower reaches of the table. Southampton remain tenth with eleven points, still unbeaten in five league matches but unable to close the gap on the teams above them. The home side ended a barren spell and proved that football does not always follow the statistics.
