Jake Tonjes will not play again this season. The 49ers tight end tore his MCL in the Week 1 loss to the Rams and needs surgery, head coach Kyle Shanahan said.
Tonjes had taken part in eight offensive snaps before the injury. San Francisco now has two tight ends left on the active roster, George Kittle and Luke Farrell.
Tonjes goes on injured reserve.
The injury happened at SoFi Stadium, and next play the Giants there in Week 2, which runs September 18-22. San Francisco's tight end room, thinned to two, faces the rest of the season leaning heavily on Kittle.
