Berlin's basketball crowd found its home ground long before it had a name for the club that filled it: the outfit playing out of the city today grew from BG Charlottenburg, and only took the name ALBA Berlin in 1991, when a recycling company put its name on the shirt. The ground is now called Uber Arena, seats 14,500 for basketball.
From 1996–97 to 2002–03, ALBA won the German championship seven years running, then added a title in 2007–08 before a longer gap. The club returned to the top of German basketball in 2019–20 and has taken three more championships since, in 2020–21, 2021–22 and 2023–24. The German Cup has followed a similar rhythm — eleven wins scattered from 1996–97 through 2021–22 — and in 1995 the club won the FIBA Korać Cup, the first European trophy any German basketball side had lifted.
The academy has done as much for the club's reputation as any of the trophies: Franz Wagner, Johannes Thiemann, Maodo Lo and Niels Giffey all came through it, players who left Berlin already knowing how ALBA wants the game played. On court, the name attached most often to that identity is Luke Sikma, whose spell at the club spanned much of the recent title run.
After twelve seasons in EuroLeague competitions, ALBA is moving to the FIBA-run Basketball Champions League for 2025–26. The fiercer contest stays domestic: Bayern Munich is the opponent Berlin measures itself against, and the meetings between the two are known in Germany simply as the derby.
