Gayfield Park stands close enough to the North Sea that spray blows across the pitch during a north-easterly gale, and visiting sides have complained about the wind for as long as anyone can remember. The ground holds 6,600, of which 861 are seated, making it one of the smaller homes in Scottish football and one of the more exposed.

Arbroath are known as The Red Lichties, after the red light that once guided fishing boats into the harbour — a nod to the town's trade rather than to the club's own colours, maroon shirts with white trim.

The club has won the third tier twice, in 2010/11 and 2016/17, and the tier above it twice, in 2018/19 and, most recently, 2024/25. Its only spell in the Scottish top flight produced a best finish of 11th, reached twice in the 1930s, in 1935/36 and 1937/38. Cup runs have gone as far as the semi-final: the Scottish Cup in 1946/47, the League Cup in 1959/60.

Closer to home, the rivalry with Montrose forms the core of the Angus derby, a fixture that also draws in Forfar Athletic and Brechin City. Within the county, Arbroath's record is more one-sided: the Forfarshire Cup has gone to Gayfield Park 21 times, the first in 1884, six years after the club was formed on 1 July 1878.
