Dunfermline

Raith Rovers sit nine miles down the road in Kirkcaldy, and the meeting between the two is still called the Fife Derby, the one fixture that never needs an introduction on either side of the county. Little else in Fife carries the same weight, and Dunfermline's history is written as much against Raith as against anything a trophy cabinet can show.

The club itself grew out of a breakaway: members of a local cricket club split off in 1885 to form a football team of their own, and it has played out of East End Park ever since. The strongest spell came in the 1960s, when Dunfermline won the Scottish Cup twice, in 1961 and 1968, results that still mark the club's high point in the national game more than anything achieved since.

Norrie McCathie went past 500 appearances between 1981 and 1996, more than anyone else has managed in the black and white, and captained the side for much of that run before his death in 1996, a loss the club has never treated as ordinary history. Jim Leishman played for Dunfermline through the 1980s and later chaired the board, and it was under him that the club climbed back into the Scottish top flight after years outside it. Sol Bamba's time at East End Park lasted only two seasons either side of 2007, but it was enough to be remembered as one of the better defenders to wear the shirt before he moved on to bigger clubs in England and Scotland.

Dunfermline go into the current season in the Scottish Championship, under Neil Lennon, still playing in front of just under 11,500 at East End Park, in a town where the club remains the only senior football on offer.
