Penalties settled it in 1994/95, when Raith Rovers beat Celtic 6-5 from the spot to lift the Scottish League Cup, the only major trophy the club has ever won. That result sent them into Europe for the first time; in the UEFA Cup that followed they reached the second round before Bayern Munich ended the run.

The club took shape in Kirkcaldy, on the Fife coast, in 1883, and has played at Stark's Park ever since, a ground that now holds 8,867 seats. In the 1937/38 season Raith Rovers scored 142 goals, a total that still stands as a British football record.

Survival mattered more than silverware in 2005, when the property developers who owned Stark's Park drew up plans to demolish it for housing. Supporters organised the Reclaim the Rovers campaign and, with backing from Gordon Brown, raised £1.2 million to buy the ground back for the club.

Dunfermline Athletic remains the closest rival in the Fife derby, with East Fife and Cowdenbeath drawn into the fixture in its wider sense.

The Scottish Cup has never come to Kirkcaldy — Raith Rovers lost the 1913 final to Falkirk — and the league title above the second tier has stayed out of reach as well.
