In the 1927–28 season, a forward named Jimmy Smith scored 66 goals in 38 league appearances for Ayr United — a season's tally no player in British league football has matched since.

Ayr United itself came together in 1910, when two rival Ayr sides already playing in the Scottish league, Ayr F.C. and Ayr Parkhouse, merged into one club rather than compete against each other. The name has not changed since. Its nickname, The Honest Men, comes from Robert Burns's poem "Tam o' Shanter," set in the town.

The club's strongest period ran through the Second Division, which it won six times, the last in 1969–70, taking it into Scotland's top flight for a run that lasted until 1977–78.

At left-back through much of that era stood John "Spud" Murphy, who played fifteen seasons for the club between 1963 and 1978 and made 459 league appearances, still the most by any Ayr United player. He and full-back partner Dick Malone later went separate ways — Malone won the FA Cup with Sunderland.

The club's one appearance in a national cup final came in 2002, when Ayr reached the League Cup final and lost 0–4 to Rangers.

Home games are still played at Somerset Park, which holds 10,185, in the town the club has represented since two clubs became one.
