Atlético de Rafaela started life in 1907 as Club Atlético Argentino de Rafaela, taking its present name in 1915. The mutual society status adopted in 1988 gave the institution its full title, Asociación Mutual Social y Deportiva Atlético de Rafaela, though everyone in the city still calls it simply Atlético Rafaela.

Land was bought in 1921 at the corner of Urquiza and Prima Junta, replacing rented pitches the club had used before, and the stadium opened there in 1953 as Estadio Monumental — now known as Nuevo Monumental, holding 14,660. The team plays in celeste and white, originally in vertical stripes.

In 2025, Rafaela won the Torneo Federal A reduced-round playoff, beating Deportivo Susana 4-0 in the final — goals from Daniel Schunk, Amílcar Espíndola, Jorge Núñez and Gabriel Solaro — to secure a return to Primera Nacional.
