Barendrecht

BVV Barendrecht saves its sharpest edge for VV Smitshoek, the neighbour it meets every pre-season in a derby that matters more locally than the league table around it. Bragging rights inside Barendrecht carry further than most of what the club has won on the pitch.

The club traces back to 12 February 1926, when youth sides EDO and Excelsior merged under the name DETO; it became BVV Barendrecht only in 1930. Growth since then has run through the amateur ranks in fits and starts, title after regional title — Vierde Klasse in 1963, then Derde, Tweede and Eerste Klasse, up to the Hoofdklasse in 1998 and again in 2010. The Derde Divisie crown in 2024 sent them back into the Tweede Divisie, a level they had already sampled between 2016 and 2019 before being relegated.

Cup football has its own rules, and Barendrecht have twice made the KNVB Beker's later rounds count for something beyond a good run: in 2009/10 they reached the eighth-finals before losing to FC Groningen, and in the same competition they have knocked out Eredivisie sides — Ajax in 2021/22, NAC Breda in 2024/25. The 2009 season delivered the amateur game's own version of a cup double, the KNVB Beker voor Amateurs won against LRC Leerdam.

Not every chapter reflects well on the club. In May 2023 the Dutch football association docked Barendrecht four points and shut them out of the promotion play-offs after finding they had conceded goals deliberately to influence the standings.

Denzel Dumfries passed through the youth ranks in 2013 and 2014, one line on a academy sheet that later produced a full Netherlands international.
