Barra Mansa

The nearest thing to a state title still belongs to Barra Mansa: the Campeonato Fluminense of 1953, settled with a 1-0 win over Goytacaz in the Super-Campeonato final. Everything else the club has claimed sits a level down — regional and municipal cups collected across the mid-twentieth century, among them three Copa Vale do Paraíba wins in the 1960s and a run of eleven Campeonato Citadino de Barra Mansa titles between 1940 and 1964. Promotion has been trickier: a Módulo Intermediário title in 1995 was not converted into a place in the higher division after the Rio de Janeiro football federation withheld it, and the closest the club has come since was winning the Campeonato Carioca Série B in 2014.

The city gave the club its nickname, Leão do Sul, and its identity is bound up with the south of Rio de Janeiro state.

Barra Mansa's clearest claim on the wider game is a name rather than a trophy: Jair da Rosa Pinto, known here as Jajá de Barra Mansa, was brought through by the club in 1938 before going on to play for Brazil and finish runner-up at the 1950 World Cup.
