Charles Schwab ran the steelworks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and in 1914 he turned a company football side that had played as amateurs since 1907 into a professional outfit, giving it his firm's name. Bethlehem Steel FC took the field in white shirts with black shorts and socks, and for the next decade and a half rarely lost the habit of winning.

The club took the league title nine times between 1912 and 1929, and added the National Challenge Cup five times and the American Cup six. It played its home matches at the Bethlehem Steel Athletic Field, built in 1913, until the steel company's football operation folded after the spring of 1930.

The name came back in 2015, chosen by fan vote for a new club that Philadelphia Union set up in the USL to develop young players. This Bethlehem Steel had no link to the old one beyond the name and, in time, the colours: navy blue, gold and red, a blend of the historic club's identity with the Union's own. It played its early seasons at Murray H. Goodman Stadium, Lehigh University's ground in Lafayette Valley, which holds 16,000. In 2018 the team moved to Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, and a year later it was renamed Philadelphia Union II, retiring the Bethlehem Steel name for a second time.

Philadelphia Union II has yet to win a trophy in the USL or in MLS Next Pro, where it now plays as the parent club's development side.
