«Defiance»
Seattle Sounders FC needed somewhere to put its young players, and in October 2014 it built one: a second team of its own, housed at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. The name said as much — Seattle Sounders FC 2.
That arrangement lasted until 2018, when the team moved south to Tacoma and Cheney Stadium. The following January, after a public campaign inviting supporters to submit ideas, the team became Tacoma Defiance .
In 2022 the Defiance left USL Championship for MLS Next Pro, and in 2024 home matches and training both shifted again, this time to the Sounders' new facility at Longacres in Renton.
What the club has not done is win. Not the USL Championship, not MLS Next Pro. Play-off qualification stayed out of reach through most of the USL years, and the U.S. Open Cup was closed to it entirely — a reserve side does not enter.
