The team now plays as Sporting Kansas City II in MLS Next Pro, and its last deep run came in 2023, when it reached the play-off quarter-finals. The reserve side of Sporting Kansas City has yet to win anything in that competition.

It arrived as United Soccer League's 30th franchise on 22 October 2015. For the first three seasons the address was Swope Soccer Village on the Missouri side of the city, a 3,557-seat ground also known as Victory Field. From 2019 the Rangers moved across the state line to Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, the parent club's stadium, which holds 30,991 for football.

Kansas City won the Western Conference play-offs in 2016 and again in 2017, and lost the USL Cup final both times. The first of those, against New York Red Bulls II, finished 1-5; the second went to Louisville City.

Dominic Dwyer played at Swope in 2013, two years before the club formally existed.
