Edwin Cerrillo was on the pitch in Greenville in October 2019 when the club took the first USL League One final ever played, a 1-0 win over Greenville Triumph SC. That was the season North Texas SC existed for: a side assembled the previous winter as the reserve team of FC Dallas, sent out to play its first competitive matches, and finished the year holding both the regular-season shield and the trophy.

The idea behind it was straightforward enough — give the FC Dallas academy a professional rung between youth football and MLS. What has been less settled is where the club actually plays. The first season was in Frisco. From 2020 the team moved to Arlington, and it has spent the years since at Choctaw Stadium. From 2026 that ends: the club moves to Mansfield and a purpose-built 7,000-seat stadium, a venue roughly the size of the crowds it actually draws.

The best night of the club's second era came in 2024. Two goals down at half-time of the MLS Next Pro Cup final against Philadelphia Union II, North Texas clawed their way back and won it 3-2 with a stoppage-time goal. It capped a season in which the side had already finished top of the Frontier Division and the Western Conference.

The fixtures that carry the most edge are against Houston Dynamo II — the Texas derby — and, more recently, Austin FC II.

Cerrillo remains the name attached to the 2019 team, the player who came through the reserve side in its first season and went up to the senior squad, which is the whole reason the club was set up in the first place.
