Bnei Sakhnin

Bnei Sakhnin sit in Liga Leumit, Israel's second tier. The club that once carried the Galilee's only Arab-majority town into European football now measures a season by promotion form rather than continental draws.

That earlier run remains the reference point. In 2003/04, their first season in Ligat Ha'Al, Bnei Sakhnin beat Hapoel Haifa 4-1 in the final to take the State Cup — the first Arab club to win it. The trophy sent them into the UEFA Cup the following season, a first taste of Europe for a side that had reached the top division only a year earlier, becoming the second Arab club to get there after Hapoel Taibe. Abbas Suan captained that team; he had already spent years in Sakhnin's midfield by then and stayed at the club into the following decade, later scoring the injury-time equaliser for Israel against the Republic of Ireland in World Cup qualifying that made him known well beyond Sakhnin.

The club's fixtures with Beitar Jerusalem carry a weight few derbies do — Beitar's supporters have long been associated with hard-right, anti-Arab politics, and matches between the two are read in Israel as something closer to a national fault line than a football rivalry.

Bnei Sakhnin play at Doha Stadium, an 8,500-seat ground built in 2006 with financing from Qatar. The black-and-white colours give the club its nickname, the Black and Whites, though locally it is still known as Ihud — Union.

The name traces back to 1991, when two rival local sides, Maccabi Sakhnin and Hapoel Sakhnin, merged into one club under a single town's banner. Ihud Bnei Sakhnin translates as the Union of the Sons of Sakhnin, and the club has carried that name, and that origin, since.
