Caen

Caen's fullest years at the top ran through the early 1990s, when a side built around the UEFA Cup run of 1992–93 finished fifth in Ligue 1 the season before, still the club's best league placing. Xavier Gravelaine scored in that European campaign.

The club itself came together on 17 November 1913, when Club Sportif Caennais merged with Club Malherbe Caennais. Before the merged identity reached the professional game, it collected regional honours: Lower Normandy titles either side of the First World War, then the Normandy Championship five times between 1939 and 1966, and two Division 3 titles in the 1975 and 1980 west-group seasons that pushed the club toward the divisions it now occupies.

William Gallas left Caen for Chelsea and later Arsenal, and N'Golo Kanté came through the youth academy before his own move into the game's upper tier — both departures the club has had to live with rather than repeat as arrivals. Kylian Mbappé now holds a majority stake without ever having worn the shirt. Matches against Le Havre carry the weight of the Derby Normand.

A Coupe de la Ligue final appearance in 2004–05 ended in defeat, and the semi-final reached in the Coupe de France in 2017–18.
