Downtown boosters in Chattanooga wanted a team the city could actually own, not just watch, and in 2009 Davis Grizzard and Sheldon Grizzle built one on that premise. Chattanooga FC still runs on it: more than 3,200 supporters hold shares in the club.
The Chattahooligans made themselves heard through years in the NPSL and NISA — eight Southeast Conference crowns between 2010 and 2019, four straight NISA Independent Cup Southeast wins from 2020 to 2023. The one trophy with a final attached to it came in 2015, when CFC beat the Maryland Bays 2-0 and then the Michigan Bucks 3-0 to lift the Hank Steinbrecher Cup. Two NPSL championship finals, in 2010 and 2012, both ended the other way.
Rod Underwood coached the club from its first season until September 2024. Chris Nugent has run the team since Underwood's departure.
A rivalry arrived only in 2025, once Chattanooga Red Wolves SC gave the city a derby to fight over. The first meeting, a U.S. Open Cup second-round tie on 2 April, drew 12,131 fans — a record for the competition — and finished 1-1 before the Red Wolves won it on penalties, 5-4.
Home games are played at Finley Stadium, known in full as Davenport Field at Finley Stadium.
