The idea started with teachers and pupils at Stevnsgade Skole in the Nørrebro district, who put together a basketball team in the spring of 1958. Stevnsgade Basketball took its first steps on 5 May that year and grew into one of Denmark's oldest clubs in the sport.

Bjarne Bisgaard anchored a side that won the Basketligaen in 1979 and 1980 and lifted the Danish Cup in 1979, good enough for entry into the FIBA European Champions Cup, where the club faced Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and KK Bosna in the 1979–80 and 1980–81 seasons without taking a win. Bisgaard played 285 games in the shirt before his record fell in the following decade to Waseem Ahmad, who reached 316 appearances.

The name on the shirt kept changing. In 1999 the club merged with the football side BK Skjold and played for nearly a decade as BK Skjold Basket in red, white and black; the merger broke up in 2008, and the black-and-white colours and the Stevnsgade name returned. The elite team was hived off into its own company in 2018, went by Stevnsgade Supermen and then Copenhagen Basketball, before settling on BC Copenhagen in 2022 — the nickname Supermen has stayed attached to it throughout. Matches are still played in the 600-seat Nørrebrohallen.

Against BK Amager, the club's opponent in the Copenhagen derby, current names such as Mathias Christensen, Bakary Dibba and Durell Vinson now carry a shirt that once belonged to Bisgaard and Ahmad.
