Los Chankas reached the top flight of Peruvian football for the first time in their history by way of a second-place finish in the 2023 Liga 2 table. The following season they played their debut year in Liga 1, closing the cumulative standings in tenth place. The road there ran through years of Copa Perú qualifying rounds, where the club settled for regional-stage exits between 2010 and 2015, and through the departmental league itself, which the club won twice, most recently in 2013.

The club began life in 1989 as Cultural Santa Rosa, playing in green and yellow. In 2021 it took the name Club Deportivo Los Chankas CYC, and with the new name came a new identity on the pitch: garnet and orange replaced the old colours, and the nickname Los Guerreros Chankas stuck. That same year, still finishing out life under the old name, the squad drew on players such as Jean Deza, who had come through Alianza Lima and Binacional before arriving in Andahuaylas, and Kevin Serna, who scored against Alianza Lima in the Bicentenario Cup.

Home games are played at the Estadio Los Chankas in Andahuaylas, which holds 10,000.

Their arrival in Liga 1 put a club from the Apurímac highlands, a region with no previous top-flight history, in the same table as Alianza Lima.
