Forty times, Deportivo Saprissa has been champion of Costa Rica, and a title in 2024 followed the same pattern as one in 1952, another season closed out at the top of the Primera División.
The club grew out of San Juan de Tibás, a neighbourhood on the edge of San José, where a group of young players founded it on 16 July 1935. Roberto Fernández and Fausto Leiva were among those who set it up, and the name came from Ricardo Saprissa Aymá, a Catalan businessman who paid for the team's first kit. The maroon shirt that resulted gave the club its most common nickname, Los Morados, and also earned it El Monstruo Morado. The stadium the club built for itself in 1972, also named for Saprissa, is known to supporters simply as La Cueva del Monstruo, and holds 23,112 people.
