Ebony FC

Nobody at Ebony FC pretends the club is anything other than what it is: a Kumasi side built in the lower reaches of Ghanaian football, in the Bantama suburb, with a name that promises more than a division-two outfit usually can. The "Home of Football" nickname sits oddly grand next to the club's actual history, most of which has played out away from the country's two Kumasi giants, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, whose shadow covers the city regardless of which pitch Ebony trains on.

The club's own ground, the Bantama Kokooase Astro Turf, tells part of that story on its own — an artificial pitch rather than the stadiums the bigger Kumasi clubs call home. For the match that mattered, Ebony FC did not stay there. On 9 May 2025, the final of the Ashanti Regional Division Two was played at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, and Ebony beat Benab FC 2-1 to take the title and, with it, promotion to the Ghana National Division One League, Zone II, for the 2025/26 season.

That result is the closest thing the club has to a landmark, the first time Bantama's team has reached a level where its name might travel beyond the suburb. The promotion also gives some weight to a detail otherwise easy to overlook: Abasa Aremeyaw, once on Ebony's books, went on to play for Slovakia's MŠK Žilina in the UEFA Youth League, a reminder that a Division Two club can still produce a player who ends up somewhere far from Kumasi.

Ebony FC now heads into its first season in Division One having never played there before, still based at the Bantama Kokooase turf, still working out what a "Home of Football" looks like a tier higher.
