El Makarem de Mahdia spent most of the 1970s in the top flight and finished sixth twice, in 1970/71 and 1973/74.

Béchir Attia set it up in 1937 as a charitable association, and only two years later did a football section get added to it; Attia stayed on as president for years afterwards and was made honorary president in 1953.

Between the two relegations, in 1975/76 and 1981/82, sits the club's one recognisable name from the era: Moktar Hasni , a forward who played for Mahdia from 1971 to 1975 and went on to earn nine caps for Tunisia, including an appearance at the 1978 World Cup. Since the last drop out of the top flight, EM Mahdia has settled into life shuttling between the second and third tiers, promoted back to Ligue 2 for the 2023–24 season after several years spent mostly in Ligue 3.
