Chase Center sits on the San Francisco waterfront with room for 18,064 for basketball, and from the 2025 season it has belonged to the Valkyries as much as to the Warriors who play there.

The franchise itself dates only to October 5, 2023, when the WNBA awarded it to Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, making the Valkyries the league's 13th team and its first expansion side in 15 years. The roster took shape the following year through the 2024 WNBA Expansion Draft, which brought in players such as Veronica Burton and Kate Martin from elsewhere in the league.

Between them they turned a squad assembled from other teams' rosters into a unit that finished 23–21 and claimed the 8th seed in the Western Conference. The run ended there, swept 0–2 by the Minnesota Lynx in the first round.

There is no title to point to yet, and no rivalry with the history to be called a derby, though the Los Angeles Sparks sit close enough on the map to make an obvious starting point.
