Ginger Ackerley wanted Seattle in the WNBA, and in 2000 she and her husband Barry Ackerley put up the expansion franchise that became the Storm.

The championship came four times, in 2004, 2010, 2018 and 2020, and Seattle has never lost a WNBA Finals series it has reached. The first of those titles, in 2004, came under Anne Donovan, who became the first female head coach to win a WNBA championship.

Sue Bird arrived in the 2002 draft and stayed through 2017; her number 10 hangs retired at the arena, alongside Lauren Jackson's 15, retired after Jackson's run from 2001 to 2012. Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd carried the club through its later championship years, into the 2020s.

Matches against the Phoenix Mercury are billed as Rivalry Night; Las Vegas, Connecticut and Minnesota have since given the Storm newer rivals.

By 2008 the franchise Ginger Ackerley had built was for sale again, the same year Clay Bennett moved the NBA's SuperSonics out of Seattle to Oklahoma City. A group of local businesswomen, among them Dawn Trudeau, Lisa Brummel and Ginny Gilder, bought the Storm, keeping in Seattle the team the Ackerleys had started.
