The 1969 Finnish championship came down to three points between KPV and KuPS. Four years later, second place in 1973 brought Köln, and KPV lost both legs.

Those seasons sit inside a short window. Third place in 1971 and again in 1975 bracket the run. The 1980s and 1990s brought financial trouble severe enough to force a restructuring.

What survived the money problems was the junior side of the club. KPV had started organised youth work in 1938 and kept it going through the war years, and in 2002 the Football Association of Finland recognised the club as a talent academy. Hannu Vainio, the outstanding figure of the 1940s, went on to play for the national team.

The return upward was slow. Promotion to Ykkönen came in 2015, and in 2018 KPV beat TPS in a play-off to reach the Veikkausliiga for the first time.
