OLS

For three seasons in the mid-1990s, the club playing out of Oulu could not turn out under its own name. Financial trouble in 1991 had pushed it into a merger with local rivals OTP to form FC Oulu, and when football split back off in 1995 the paperwork had not settled: the team spent 1996 to 1998 as OPP, then as OPS, before the letters OLS went back on the shirts in 1999.

That was not the club's first change of identity. Founded in 1941, it merged with Oulun Pallo-Veikot in the early 1970s to become OLS-Veikot, the name under which it recorded its best-ever top-flight finish, 12th, in 1978. The football section broke away as its own organisation, FC Oulun OLS ry, in 1990, only to be folded into FC Oulu a year later.

What survived all of it was the academy. Antti Niemi came through it on his way to 67 caps for Finland and goalkeeping spells at Southampton, Fulham and Rangers; Mika Nurmela left for Heerenveen, Kaiserslautern and Malmö and earned 71. OTP, the club OLS was once folded into, remains its closest rival, the fixture still the one that matters most in the city.

OLS have gone up from the third tier five times, most recently in 2023, and finished third in the second division in 2024, playing home matches now at the Oulu-lehti Areena in yellow and blue, in front of a ground that holds 4,717. A Finnish league title has never come, and neither has the Cup.
