OLS and RoPS Rovaniemi shared six goals in a 3:3 draw during the group stage of the Ykkönen on Saturday, a result that kept both sides within striking distance of one another in the table. The hosts had looked ahead at half-time before the visitors struck back early in the second period.
And here's the thing about this fixture — it never settled. E. Raittinen opened the scoring for OLS in the tenth minute, but J. Lotvonen equalised for RoPS just before the break. A. Mekki restored the home side's lead on 36 minutes, only for E. Merikanto to level again moments later.
The second half brought more fireworks. R. Cato gave RoPS the lead in the 47th minute after J. Koistinen came on for OLS, but O. Suutari responded to make it 3:3 on 58 minutes. The game opened up further with a flurry of substitutions around the hour mark, and RoPS seized control of proceedings.
By then RoPS had carved OLS open with their superior numbers. The visitors registered 102 attacks against 79 for the hosts, while their 16 shots on target dwarfed the home side's six. Both teams held 50 per cent possession, but the statistics told a different story — many chances went begging on both sides.
The disciplinary record reflected the intensity. Seven yellow cards were shown in total, with RoPS collecting two and OLS one, though one card at 75 minutes had no player name attached. S. Roiha and O. Lamsa went to the referee late on, as did S. Ala-Iso.
In the table the result keeps things tight. OLS sit fifth with 34 points from 22 games, while RoPS remain in second place with 40 points. The gap between them remains just six points, and neither side can afford to drop too far behind.
