Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi

In 2018 Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi went under. The club that had carried the city's name in basketball since 1993 folded after financial trouble and relegation, and for a year the municipality had no team to speak of. Vahap Seçer, the mayor, decided that would not stand, and in 2019 a new club rose in the same colours, with Berkay Üstündağ installed as president.

They call it Carettalar now, after the loggerhead turtles that come ashore to nest on Mersin's beaches — an odd nickname for a basketball team, but the club wears it on its shirts in orange, navy and white all the same.

The old club's most durable line ran from 2004–05, when the men's side won the Turkish Basketball Second League and pushed up into the top flight, while the women's team added a Presidential Cup and a runners-up finish in the national league.

Whatever crowd fits in for a home game does so at the Edip Buran Arena, a ground that holds 1,750 — a fraction of the 7,500-seat hall the old club once used.

Mersin now takes that promotion into the Süper Lig.
