The fiercest fixture on the calendar runs east along the Volga, to Kazan and Rubin — the two sides have met more than fifty times in domestic competition, and that history outlasted the old cross-town rivalry with Volga Nizhny Novgorod, which lost its edge once Volga was dissolved in 2018.

Locally the club is known as City, playing in sky blue, white and blue, and its home ground is the Sovcombank Arena, holding 45,319. The academy runs its own farm side, НН-М, set up in January 2024 around players born in 2006 and 2007 and coached by Alexander Vingart; rather than share the main stadium, it plays its home fixtures at the Lokomotiv ground across town, a deliberate step down in scale that keeps the young squad closer to its own age group in the Youth Football League.

On the pitch, the club's biggest jump came in the 2020/21 season, when third place in the First League carried it up into the Russian Premier League. That promotion followed an earlier climb through the lower tiers: third in the Ural-Povolzhye zone of the PFL in 2015/16, then top spot in the Ural-Privolzhye zone in 2016/17, which took the side into the National Football League.

The story began on 1 June 2015, when the club was founded as FC Volga-Olimpiets. It became Nizhny Novgorod in 2018, took the name Pari Nizhny Novgorod in 2022 under a sponsorship deal, and reverted to Nizhny Novgorod in 2026.
