The roots go back to 1950, through Dynamo Nové Zámky and TJ Lokomotíva before the club settled into its present form as TJ Štart in 1961. What followed was a long run of near misses rather than silverware: nine bronze medals in the Slovak Extraliga between 2000/01 and 2011/12, and three lost Slovak Cup finals, in 1998, 2001 and 2005. No title from either competition, but the consistency of finishing third points to a club that stayed competitive at the top of the table for over a decade without ever quite breaking through.

Locally, the fixture that matters is against HKM Šaľa, played as a straightforward regional derby within the Nitra Region, with HK Agro Topoľčany the other name on that list.
