PAEEK

Nicosia's ground for PAEEK carries the name Keryneia Epistrofi, which means Kyrenia return, and that word is the whole point of the club. PAEEK was formed on 10 October 1953 by graduates of Kyrenia Gymnasium, in the town of Kyrenia itself, on the island's north coast. The Turkish invasion of 1974 put that coast under occupation and pushed the club out. In the season that followed, PAEEK merged with another displaced side, AEK Karavas, and the two clubs completed their formal union as PAEEK in March 1977, settling in the Strovolos and Lakatamia area of Nicosia, where they have stayed since.

The colours changed with the displacement. Before 1974 the club played in yellow and black; afterwards it adopted black and white, black for the mourning of the invasion, white for the hope of returning to Kyrenia, and the club has said it means to take the old yellow and black back once that return happens. The nickname, Keryneites, people of Kyrenia, has stayed fixed to a place the club no longer plays in.

A sixth-place finish in the relegation round sent the club back down. Among the players it produced, goalkeeper Alexandros Paschalakis went on from PAEEK to PAOK and the Greece national team.

The fixture that matters most is against Ethnikos Achna, a club with the same story in reverse: displaced from Achna in the south rather than Kyrenia in the north.
