Club Atlético Platense did not start there. It was founded on 25 May 1905 in Recoleta, and the name itself came from a bet: a group of young men staked 445 pesos on a horse called Gay Simón, running for the Platense stud, and used the winnings to set up the club. The original strip borrowed the stable's red and black, but it was later swapped for white and brown, copying the jacket and cap of the jockey who rode Gay Simón to that win — colours the club has kept ever since, and the reason it's nicknamed Calamar. That name has its own story: a journalist once wrote that the players moved "like a squid in its ink" on a pitch the river regularly flooded with mud.

The ground moved with the club more than once — a square in Recoleta first, then two sites in Núñez — before relegation to the second division in 1971 forced Platense out altogether. It took until 1979 to settle in Florida, where the Estadio Ciudad de Vicente López, holding 28,530, has been home since.

Platense spent long stretches outside the top division, and its honours board reads like a record of climbing back: Primera B in 1976 and 2006, Primera B Metropolitana in 2018, and a 2021 promotion play-off won on penalties against Estudiantes de Río Cuarto that ended 22 years away from the elite. A Copa de la Liga final defeat to Rosario Central on penalties followed in 2023. Then, in 2025, the club won the Apertura, beating Huracán in the final for its first-ever national championship, and finished runner-up in that year's Trofeo de Campeones.

The academy's best-known graduate left almost before anyone noticed him: David Trezeguet came through Platense's youth ranks from the age of eight, played five games for the first team in 1994, and was sold to Monaco.
