PWD Sports Club

Promotion in 2025 came after eleven years of waiting, and PWD Sports Club owed it to a season that began, in effect, with someone else's failure: the club moved up into the Bangladesh Championship League in 2023 only because several licensed teams could not meet the requirements to take their own places, and finished third in the Dhaka Senior Division League the year before. Two seasons later PWD won the Championship League outright and secured a route into the Bangladesh Premier League for 2025–26 — the top flight of Bangladeshi football, a place the club had not occupied in two decades.

That gap says something about how PWD has spent most of its existence. The club was set up in 1954 by Eyaz Khan, the chief engineer of the Public Works Department, together with Abdul Rahim and a handful of colleagues who wanted a recreational side for department staff. It moved through the Dhaka league system fast: the Third Division in 1956, promotion the following year, and the First Division title in 1958, the season of its own top-flight debut. Since then the club has gone up and down more often than it has stayed still — relegated in 1979, promoted again in 1984, relegated twice more through the 1990s, champions again in 1999 and relegated again within the year, dropped as far as the Third Division in 2005 before working back up from there.

Home games are played at the Shaheed Barkat Stadium in Segunbagicha, a ground that holds 5,000 people. In an earlier era the club sent players into representative football abroad — Nabi Chowdhury, Abdul Jabbar and Qadir Bakhsh among those who turned out for Pakistan in the years before Bangladesh's independence — though PWD has never lifted the Federation Cup. What it has kept, through all the movement between divisions, is the identity it started with: an engineers' department side that built its way back to the top one promotion at a time.
