Fifty-five Scottish league titles is not a total anyone reaches by accident, and Rangers built it across more than a century, from 1891 through to a 2021 championship. The club also holds 34 Scottish Cups and 28 League Cups, and in 1972 it beat Dynamo Moscow 3–2 in Barcelona to win the European Cup Winners' Cup, the one European trophy the club has taken.
None of that made 2012 easier. The company that had carried those honours went into administration and was liquidated, and Rangers started again in the fourth tier of Scottish football as a new entity.
The club took its name in 1873, a year after four young Scots, among them brothers Moses and Peter McNeil, had met at what is now Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow. Ibrox has hosted the club since 1899, built by the architect Archibald Leitch, and its history carries weight beyond results: 25 spectators died there in 1902, and 66 more in a crush on the stairways in 1971.
Ibrox now holds just over 50,000, in blue, white and black, in a city that has never treated the derby as just another match.
