Glasgow splits its footballing loyalty between two clubs, and the fixture between them, known as the Old Firm, carries weight well beyond the pitch. Rangers has long been associated with the city's Protestant support, Celtic with its Catholic one, and the derby remains one of the most heated in world football.
The club formed on 1 March 1872, making it one of the oldest football clubs still in existence. Home matches are played at Ibrox Stadium, which holds 51,700. Rangers has won the Scottish league championship 55 times, a national record, and the League Cup 28 times, also a record.
Beyond Scotland, the record is thinner. Rangers reached two European finals in the 1960s before winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1972, beating Dynamo Moscow 3-2 in the final.
In 2012 the club's debts passed £100m, and the company that had carried the Rangers name through all those competitions went into liquidation on 31 October that year. Football under the same badge started again in the fourth tier of Scottish football. Rangers were back in the Premiership by 2016, and in 2020/21, with Steven Gerrard as manager, won the title outright, ending Celtic's run of consecutive championships.
No European trophy has followed the one from 1972. Rangers reached the UEFA Cup final in 2008 and the Europa League final in 2022, and lost both.
