Real Santander

Piedecuesta sits just outside Bucaramanga, one of several towns folded into that city's metropolitan area rather than a place with a footballing identity of its own. Real Santander only became its club in 2021, and even that arrival came at the end of a difficult few years rather than as any kind of homecoming.

The amateur side that grew into the club traces back to 2000-2002, though the professional entity dates its founding to 17 January 2006 in nearby Floridablanca. Eleven months later it bought the professional licence of the defunct Pumas de Casanare, entering Primera B, Colombia's second tier, from the 2007 season.

A financial crisis in 2019-2020 pushed the club out of Santander department altogether. It relocated to the island of San Andrés and competed there as Real San Andrés before working its way back to the mainland, first to Barrancabermeja, then to Piedecuesta.

Estadio Villa Concha, the ground it settled into, holds 5,500. The nickname Albicelestes and the sky blue and white colours have stayed constant through all the moving around.

None of it has brought a title. The closest Real Santander has come was in 2017, when it reached the Apertura final of Primera B and lost to Boyacá Chicó. In the Copa Colombia, a quarter-final in 2011, reached with players on loan from Atlético Nacional, remains the club's best run in the competition.

2024 gave little to build on: 15th place in the Apertura, bottom of the table in the Clausura, and a 5-10 defeat in the Copa Colombia.
