Covilhã spent the 2023-24 season in Liga 3, Portugal's third tier, finishing eighth and taking a place in the promotion play-offs.

The following season brought the club to the final of the Taça de Portugal, in 1956-57. Covilhã lost it, and has not been back.

Home is the Estádio Municipal José dos Santos Pinto, which holds 3,500. Some matches are played instead at the newer Complexo Desportivo da Covilhã, slightly smaller again at 3,000. The last of its four Segunda Divisão titles came in 1986-87; after that the record is a run of Série Centro championships in the third tier, four of them between 1996 and 2005.

The green and white are old enough to be written into the club anthem. In the hills of the Beira interior the team is known as the Leões da Serra — the lions of the mountains.

The lion is not accidental. When Covilhã was founded, on 2 June 1923, it was set up as the eighth affiliated branch of Sporting Clube de Portugal.
