Coimbra has organised itself around its university for the best part of eight centuries, and Académica grew out of that world rather than beside it. Black and white are the colours.
The club's honours sit either side of a long gap. It beat Benfica 4-3 in the 1938-39 Taça de Portugal final, then waited until 2011-12 for a second, edging Sporting 1-0. In between, four Segunda Divisão titles — 1948-49, 1972-73, 1979-80, 1983-84 — were won.
He later built a coaching career off the back of it.
The 2022-23 relegation to Liga 3 was the first in the club's history; promotion back to Liga Portugal 2 followed in 2024-25.
