Matosinhos sits at the mouth of the Leça, north of Porto. The football club there still carries the sea in its nicknames — Bébés do Mar , Heróis do Mar — and plays at a ground called the Estádio do Mar, which holds 9,730.
The afternoon that fixed Leixões in Portuguese football came on 1 July 1962, when the club beat Porto 2-0 in the final of the Portuguese Cup. A town of trawlermen took the trophy off the biggest club in the north.
The rest has mostly been spent in the second tier. The 2006-07 season ended with the Second League championship and a return to the top flight.
Varzim and Rio Ave are close enough along the coast that the meeting with either is called the Dérbi do Mar, and Leça FC sit in the same town.
