The side exists because the league allowed it to. Founded in 1999, the B team was wound up in 2006 and stayed gone for six years, until the LPFP opened the second tier to reserve sides in 2012 and Porto paid the €50,000 registration fee to come back.

Vitinha and Galeno both came through the B side before the first team, and before them Hélder Postiga and Hugo Almeida did the same.

The ground, CTFD Jorge Costa in Vila Nova de Gaia, is a training complex first and a stadium second.

The one title came in 2015–16, when the B side won the Segunda Liga. João Brandão took charge in June 2024.
