Sigortam.net ITU

The İTÜ Sports Club put a basketball team together in 1953. Twenty-six founding members signed it into existence, among them Prof. İlhami Civaoğlu and Naim Şukal.

What the club is remembered for happened inside a five-year stretch at the turn of the 1970s. Between 1967-68 and 1972-73 it won the national championship five times running and added two national cups along the way, seven trophies in all. Kemal Erdenay was one of the players who built that reputation.

The maroon shirt is itself a small departure: the university's colour is navy, but the basketball side has always played in maroon and white. The club has kept finding its way back into senior competition — it stepped into the Basketbol Süper Ligi for the 2019-20 season under the sponsored name Sigortam.net ITU, taking the place vacated by Istanbul BBSK, and more recent squads have carried players such as Onuralp Bitim and Vladimir Štimac. Home games in that period moved away from Istanbul altogether, played out at the Mamak Belediyesi Spor Salonu in Ankara.
