The club took its name from Stabekk, the district it grew out of, and was formally set up on 16 March 1912. For most of the years since, home has meant Nadderud — the old ground from 1961, then a three-year spell away at the rented Telenor Arena , then Nadderud again until 2026. The replacement, Nye Nadderud Stadion at Bekkestua, holds 8,000 and opened on 27 April 2026 with a 2-1 win over Madla.

That same 2009 season, Stabæk became the first Norwegian club to have both its men's and women's teams in the top divisions at once.

Two players sit at the top of the club's lists and both stayed long enough to earn it. Others passed through — Alanzinho, Veigar Páll Gunnarsson, Somen Tchoyi — and Ada Hegerberg came through on the women's side.
