Vénus

Football arrived in Mahina long before organised competition did, and by the end of 1945 the district had enough of it to put a name to a club: AS Vénus, formed on 28 December that year on the northern coast of Tahiti. It grew into something well beyond a football section — the association today counts around 1,700 members across football, basketball and volleyball, run out of the small commune it never left.

The football side has spent decades trading the Tahitian title with two names in particular. Against AS Pirae, the fixture is known locally as the Classico; against AS Tefana and AS Dragon, the contest is for the top of the table most seasons. Vénus have topped Ligue 1 repeatedly since their first championship in 1953, with further titles arriving in clusters through the 1990s and again in 2019 and 2025, and they hold the Coupe de Polynésie française on nine occasions, most recently in 2022.

Their best run beyond Tahiti came in 2022, when they went for the jugular in the OFC Champions League semi-final, beating Hienghène Sport 4-0, before Auckland City proved too strong in the final, winning 3-0. Roonui Tehau scored in that semi-final; his brother, Teaonui Tehau, known as Filou, became the club's all-time top scorer and captain before leaving in 2025 to sign Tahiti's first professional football contract, at Tahiti United. The club still plays home matches at the Stade Municipal de Mahina, in front of crowds capped at 1,500.
