Extra time in the 2022–23 Hungarian Cup final ran against Budafok, and Zalaegerszegi TE saw it out to win 2:0.

ZTE won the second division in 2018–19 and went straight back to NB I, the league it had won outright in 2001–02. Since then the pattern has been familiar in a town of this size: promotion, consolidation, another cup final in 2025–26.

Football in Zalaegerszeg predates the club by eight years. A team formed in the town in 1912; the organisation that carries the name today was set up in 1920 as Zalaegerszegi Torna Egylet — the Zalaegerszeg Gymnastics Association. The blue and white have stayed.
