About the player
Chelsea signed Matthew Cox at the age of eight, and he spent six years in the academy before being released at fourteen over concerns about his height. AFC Wimbledon took him on, and by 2021 Brentford had brought him in, tying him to a contract that runs to 2028.
Cox built his reputation with England's youth sides rather than at club level. He won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship with England in Slovakia in 2022 and was named in the Team of the Tournament, having already earned caps at Under-17 level. He went on to add appearances for the Under-20s, including a place in the squad for the 2023 Under-20 World Cup, and has since been called into Under-21 training without featuring.
Game time at Brentford proved hard to come by, so loan spells became the way to get minutes. He made 34 appearances for Bristol Rovers across the 2023–24 season, before a shorter loan at Crawley Town. He is now with Shrewsbury Town, on loan for the 2025–26 season.
