The Aviva Stadium sits on the site of the old Lansdowne Road, and it is there that the Republic of Ireland play their home matches, in front of 51,711 seated supporters.

The Football Association of Ireland came into being on 2 September 1921, and the team took the field for the first time on 28 May 1924, beating Bulgaria 1–0 at the Paris Olympics.

Jack Charlton's spell in charge produced the side's best years: a run to the World Cup quarter-finals in Italy in 1990, lost to England on penalties, and a highest world ranking of sixth, reached in 1993. Two more last-16 exits followed, both by golden goal, to Italy in 1994 and Germany in 2002, and in 2016 the team reached the same stage of the European Championship before France ended the run.

No one has worn the green shirt more often than Robbie Keane, who won 146 caps and scored 68 goals between 1998 and 2016, records that still stand. Roy Keane's years in midfield through the 1990s belong to the same period of the team's history, though for different reasons.

Ireland's fiercest fixture is against England, freighted with history that goes beyond football, while the meetings with Northern Ireland, played across a divided island, are known simply as the Irish derby.
