Sheger Ketema

Sheger Ketema enters the Ethiopian Premier League for the 2025-2026 season, its first taste of the top flight, after coming up from the Higher League, where an eighth-place finish in Group B in 2023/24 gave little hint of what was coming.

The name itself points to where the club comes from rather than what it has won: 'Sheger' is Amharic for 'city', a nod to Addis Ababa itself rather than any particular neighbourhood, though the club is rooted in the Furi Sub City area of the capital. There are no trophies behind it, no league titles to point to.

What has drawn attention to the club had nothing to do with results. In December 2025, Sheger Ketema paid 1 million Ethiopian birr, around $6,300, to sign three players from Three Point Academy, all members of Ethiopia's under-17 side. That figure had not been paid by a top-flight club to a youth academy in recent Ethiopian football, and it marked the club out before a ball had been kicked in the top division.

Home matches are played in front of up to 25,000 at Abebe Bikila Stadium. A women's team also carries the Sheger Ketema name into the Ethiopian Women's Premier League.
