Tonnerre

The Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé holds 42,500 people, and Tonnerre have made it home for decades, sharing the pitch with the rival that gives the ground its biggest night of the year.

Tonnerre trace their history back to 1934, a founding date old enough that the club's honours read like a record of a different Cameroonian football era. Five league titles came in a tight run through the 1980s — 1981, 1983, 1984, 1987 and 1988 — a stretch that marked the club's peak as a domestic power. The Cameroon Cup came their way five times too, stretching from 1958 to 1991, and in 1975 Tonnerre lifted the African Cup Winners' Cup, the club's one continental trophy. A CAF Cup final followed in 2002, though that one ended in a runner-up finish.

No name carries more weight at the club than Roger Milla's. He wore Tonnerre's colours twice, from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1990 to 1994, either side of the international fame that made him one of African football's best-known forwards, and left as the club's all-time top scorer with 158 goals. George Weah passed through more briefly, in 1987 and 1988, before a career that took him far beyond Yaoundé.

The fixture that matters most at Tonnerre is the one against Canon Yaoundé. The Derby de Yaoundé goes back to the 1960s, and its edge came from more than football: the two clubs found themselves pulled into rival camps within the presidential family, and that political undertone stayed stitched into a rivalry that still draws the city's attention whenever the fixture comes round.
