Two of them, San Felipe F.C. and Atlético Unión, merged on 16 October 1956 to put the province on the professional map. Unión San Felipe was admitted to the Segunda División two years later.

What followed in 1970 and 1971 has not been repeated by any other club in Chile. Unión San Felipe won the second tier one year and, in its very first season among the elite, took the Primera División title outright, under coach Luis Santibáñez. The following year the club tested itself in the Copa Libertadores, finishing fourth in a group with Universidad de Chile, Alianza Lima and Universitario.

The clearest of those returns came in 2009, when Ivo Basay's side won the Primera B and beat Deportes Iquique 3-0 in the Copa Chile final, a double that sent them back up for a campaign that included a Copa Sudamericana run past Guaraní before LDU Quito ended it. Since dropping out of the top flight again in 2012, Unión San Felipe have stayed in the second division.
